Year 5

Welcome to Year 5. Our classes are:

Honduras Class - Mrs. Virdee

El Salvador Class - Mrs. Kerr

Autumn Term 1

Year 5 began Upper Key Stage 2 learning about the ancient Maya as part of their IPC history topic. They made masks and jewellery as part of their inspiration day and have learned about the different gods the Maya worshipped.

The book studied in literacy was the popular story of Varjak Paw by SF Said. This book tells the fantastic story of a cat’s struggle to save his family from a sinister stranger while being assisted by his mysterious ancestor. The children enjoyed acting out parts of the story in role plays and giving advice to the characters in conscience alleys. The children were helped to develop their writing ideas in a workshop by the book’s author who visited the school and ran a writing workshop for year 5. Many children are now reading the sequel, The Outlaw Varjak Paw.

In maths, the learning centred on understanding place value and addition and subtraction using formal written methods. In addition, the children have been working hard to develop fluency in the in multiplication tables and many are now on the leaderboard of Times Table RockStars.
