Year 2

Welcome to Year 2. Our classes are:

Vietnam Class - Mrs. Matthews

Thailand Class - Mrs. Garlick

SpringTerm 2

This half term, Year 2 have immersed themselves in their topic 'Earth our Home'.  In English the children read Roald Dahl's 'James and the Giant Peach'.  Using this text we have role played and hot seated, they looked at the format and structure of a newspaper article and this has culminated in to the children writing their own newspaper reports.  The children paricularly enjoyed coming up with puns for their own headlines - one of the favourites being 'Life's a peach!'.

The children have learnt a lot about plants and seeds.  The have found out about the different ways that seeds can be dispersed and what plants need to grow.  They turned their classrooms into a hydroponic greenhouse and grown broad beans hydroponically.  The children kept a bean diary and some of their beans grew to 45cm tall!  The teachers are hoping that the plants can be potted and will continue to grow throught the summer.

The children looked at the work of Henri Rousseau.  He was a French painter who painted plants and trees, particularly jungle scenes despite never having left France!  They were lucky enough to visit the National Gallery the home to one of Rousseau's home to one of Rousseau's most famous paintings 'Surprised'.

In Maths, the children have learnt how to calculate fractions, draw and recognise lines of symmetry, properties of 2D and 3D shapes and how to apply all of this knowledge contextually.  They have been brushing up on their mental maths skills ready for their SATs tests next month.
